How to report a stolen phone in India
India has a national system for blocking stolen phones. Here is how to use it.
1. File a police complaint
Report the loss or theft at your nearest police station or through your state police online portal. Keep a copy of the complaint and the complaint number.
2. Get a replacement SIM
Ask your operator to block the SIM and issue a duplicate SIM on the same number. You need the number active to receive the one-time password in the next step.
3. Block the phone on Sanchar Saathi (CEIR)
The Department of Telecommunications runs the Sanchar Saathi portal, which uses the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) to block lost and stolen phones across Indian networks. Submit the IMEI numbers, the police complaint details and an identity document. You can request unblocking later if you get the phone back.
4. Check before you buy
Buyers can check an IMEI with the Know Your Mobile (KYM) service on Sanchar Saathi. You can also search it here on ReportMyPhone.
5. Secure UPI and banking
Contact your bank to block UPI and mobile banking access if your phone was unlocked or your apps were not protected, and change key passwords.
