How to report a stolen phone in Nigeria

Move fast, especially if banking was on the phone.

1. Report at a police station

Report the theft at the nearest police station and ask for a written police report or extract. Your network, bank and insurer may ask for it.

2. Block your SIM and retrieve your number

Call your network (MTN, Airtel, Glo or 9mobile) or visit a service center to block the SIM and do a SIM replacement on the same number. Ask whether they can also act on the handset IMEI.

3. Block your bank access immediately

If banking apps or USSD banking were on the line, call your bank or use its emergency blocking code straight away. Many Nigerian banks have a USSD code for this. Change your banking passwords and PINs.

4. Lock and erase the phone

Use Find My (iPhone) or Find My Device (Android) from another device to lock the phone, show a contact message, and erase it if necessary.

5. Warn buyers

Report the phone here with its IMEI. Used-phone markets move fast, and anyone who checks the IMEI on ReportMyPhone before buying will see your warning.
